Translation is that

which transforms everything

so nothing changes.

─Günter Grass

I can’t think of a better description for the wonderful and complex art of translation than this one, by Nobel Prize winner Günter Grass. This is exactly what qualified translators are able to do: we deliver one same message in a different language, ensuring that the text has the same function and impact, and maintains both the original style and content.

If you need a quality translation, you should remember that only a professional translator will:

  • Eliminate the kinds of language misunderstandings that will affect your corporate communications, your services and –ultimately– your profitability.
  • Empower you to conquer new markets, addressing potential customers on their own terms.
  • Help you stand out from the competition: high-quality linguistic content can boost your search engine rankings.
  • Guarantee a job of high quality, which reflects positively on your product and brand.
  • Transform everything so nothing changes…

MY AREAS OF TRANSLATION

LIFE SCIENCES – Medical & Healthcare

When communicating medical information to people with limited English skills, an effective translation is of vital importance for both parties. Healthcare translation must be clear, patient-centered, and as straightforward as possible, in order to avoid any possible misunderstanding. Having translated for members of the Hispanic community in the USA, I’ve acquired a skill in translating:

  • Forms (member application forms, consent forms, denial forms)
  • Medical insurance forms
  • Healthcare Informatics (HI)
  • Surveys and questionnaires
  • Patient education & preventative brochures
  • Informative articles
  • Healthcare marketing

For: healthcare providers, medical facilities, pharmacy customer service, healthcare agencies, and non-profits.

Recent project: • 6,800-word translation of patient education brochure on diabetes, and the launch of new pens and needles for the administering of insulin.

During two years, I provided professional interpreting services, both in person and over the phone, enabling the conversation participants to communicate as fluently as possible. I’ve worked as an interpreter for members of the Hispanic community in the USA, assisting them over the phone in accessing public services:

Healthcare: medical facilities and pharmacy customer care, Medicaid coverage for Medicare recipients, remote assistance in doctor’s visits, in the office and patient’s home.

Social Services: social benefits, child care, unemployment assistance, food assistance, emergency shelter program, school meetings.

I have also worked as an On-site interpreter at doctor psychiatrist and English-speaking patient therapy sessions during several months.

ECOLOGY

Translation in this field is not just about publishing technical facts, environmental reports, or new legislation. It has to do with a genuine interest in raising awareness of the fragility of our environment and its crying need for protection. Being able to contribute to protecting the environment also through my work is just priceless to me. I frequently translate:

  • Informative Brochures
  • Updates and Case Studies
  • Formal Notes and Reports
  • Testing results
  • Training resources
  • NGO Newsletters

For: non-profits, aid agencies, experts in humanitarian assistance, local foundations, governmental protection agency.

Recent projects: • 9,000-word translation of the record of decision on the cleanup plan superfund. • 4,000-word translation of the funding mechanism to create a Protected Zone (Costa Rica). • Free online training resource to prepare aid workers for the demands they face in the field.

Recent project (B2B): Translation of terms and conditions, guidelines and contracts for property owners, partners, and publishers of vacation properties.

Career highlights in this field

• Nominated for the UNV Online Volunteering Award 2013 by the Equator Initiative Organization.

There are other areas of translation that require a more creative transformation of content in order to convey the same meaning, tone and style of the original text to a new audience. Particularly suited to marketing and advertising materials, this kind of translation can also be used in other forms of writing, and for other industries as well:

*I’m now stepping in ecotourism translation. If you’re into it too, I’d love to hear from you!

Technical translation is the exact rendering of highly specialized texts that include specific terminology. In-depth knowledge of your industry is key to understand and relay the concepts in your original text, so the result is a polished final text that is free of ambiguities, and written with appropriate terminology and formatting.

While I am unable to apply fixed rates to my customized services, I am happy to offer a free quotation on either a price-per-word basis (for translation and editing) or on an hourly basis (interpreting and proofreading).
